THE ROOT OF THE CONFLICT BETWEEN MUDIRUL MARKAZ AND SHEIKH MASHOOD EL-KETOUWIY — DR BASIT REVEALS

In this video, Sheikh Dr. Basit explains what he describes as one of the lesser-known origins of the long-running disagreement between Sheikh Mashood Jibril Al-Ketuwi and Sheikh Habibullah Adam Abdullahi Al-Ilory, Mudirul Markaz. According to Sheikh Basit, one of the early incidents occurred when Sheikh Adam Abdullahi Al-Ilory travelled to Cotonou, Benin Republic, during a period when there was already an issue between Sheikh Adam and his son, Sheikh Habibullah. Sheikh Basit recounts that Sheikh Mashood brought the young Habibullah to Benin Republic so that he could listen carefully to his father and learn from whatever Sheikh Adam had to say. He further recounts a statement attributed to Sheikh Mashood concerning Habibullah’s relationship with his parents. According to Sheikh Bashir, this statement was later interpreted by Habibullah in a way that contributed to the tension between them. Sheikh Basit then connects this history to the wider dispute surrounding Sheikh Adam’s properties and family affairs. He questions claims that Sheikh Mashood wanted to take control of or benefit from Sheikh Adam’s properties, arguing that, according to his account, the family itself had faced difficulties in resolving and distributing the properties following Sheikh Adam’s death. He also responds to Sheikh Dr. Yusuf Ilala and questions why, in his view, some people who were not actively involved in defending Sheikh Adam during earlier controversies are now presenting themselves as his strongest defenders. Sheikh Dr. Basit recalls an earlier period when Dr. Ibrahim allegedly wrote against and criticised Sheikh Adam. According to Bashir, he personally responded to those criticisms through poetry while Sheikh Adam’s own children did not respond publicly at the time. The video also explores why, according to Sheikh Basit, some people may have remained opposed to reconciliation between the different sides. He gives the example of the reconciliation between Sheikh Abdulwahab Zubair Al-Gamawi and Mudirul Markaz, claiming that some people connected to those who died during the earlier conflict were unhappy with the reconciliation because of the circumstances surrounding their fathers’ or teachers' deaths. These are among the historical events and explanations presented by Sheikh Basit as he attempts to give context to a dispute that many people may only know from its more recent developments.
