Vintage San Jose Elevator Co Hydraulic Scenic Swing Door Elevator (Open Hoistway!), Redwood City, CA

Located in a residential building. Finding a scenic swing door elevator is already very rare (only around 10 known examples I can think of in the Bay Area), but finding one with an open hoistway is even rarer! (I can only think of one other example) This elevator appears to have been locked off at one point (key required to open the swing door on all floors). The 3rd floor still has the original doorknob, but part of the door jamb was cut away so the door no longer locks. Fixtures: GAL black buttons Year installed: Circa 1963 Date of recording: June 2026
