Namaz-e-Ayat | Why Do We Pray It?
Most of us know that when there is a solar eclipse, lunar eclipse, or certain other natural events, we may be required to perform Namaz-e-Ayat. But how much do we actually know about this unusual prayer?
Why is Namaz-e-Ayat wajib? Where did it originate? Who first performed it? And what did Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.) and the Imams of the Ahlul Bayt (a.s.) teach about it?
In this episode of The Majlis Lab, we go beyond simply learning how to perform Namaz-e-Ayat and explore the story and meaning behind the prayer.
We examine the fascinating account of the solar eclipse around the death of Ibrahim, the son of Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.), and how the Prophet responded when people connected the eclipse with his son’s death. We also explore what the surviving Islamic sources tell us about the development of eclipse prayer and the teachings transmitted through the Ahlul Bayt (a.s.).
We also ask some questions many of us may never have considered:
Did any of the Prophets before Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.) perform Namaz-e-Ayat? Do Sunni Muslims have a similar eclipse prayer? For whom does Namaz-e-Ayat become wajib? What happens if we miss it? Can it be performed as qada? And if it is an obligatory prayer, what does knowingly neglecting it mean from the perspective of our responsibility before Allah?
And perhaps there is an even deeper question.
Today, science can explain and even predict an eclipse with extraordinary precision. So if we understand exactly how an eclipse happens, why does Islam still ask us to stop and pray?
This documentary explores the history, fiqh, and deeper meaning behind one of the most distinctive prayers in Shia Islam.
If you have performed Namaz-e-Ayat before but learn something in this video that you never knew about the prayer, please subscribe to The Majlis Lab and share the video with your family and friends.
