This week we prepare for the third grade book by starting a conversation about two-syllable words. We learn that each syllable in a word has its own vowel sound. Syllables (and vowel sounds) can be counted by clapping or placing a hand under the chin as we say a word aloud. We can draw a vertical line to break words into syllables, often between two consonants (ex: ug-ly) or double consonants (ex: pen-ny, sil-ly). All the words on this week's list end with a long E sound that is represented by Y. The first syllable of each word is closed, which means it ends with one vowel followed by a consonant. As students review the meaning of each word on the list, they label parts of speech. They also practice adding suffixes. They learn how to change the Y to I before adding an ES plural suffix (ex: puppy/puppies), an ER comparative suffix (ex: ugly/uglier) or an EST superlative suffix (ex: happy/happiest).
