Known as the last divided capital in the world, Cyprus is home to a UN buffer zone that cuts straight through Nicosia, a Turkish-controlled north recognized by exactly one country on Earth, and a banking crisis so extreme it's the only time a eurozone country ever taxed money straight out of people's bank accounts. It's also where two apostles are said to have converted a Roman governor to Christianity in AD 45, making it one of the earliest footholds of the faith in Europe. In this 4K documentary, we look at how a 1974 invasion split the island in two, how a banking collapse in 2013 triggered panic and capital controls across the country, and how a citizenship-for-investment scheme collapsed after an Al Jazeera investigation exposed officials selling passports to people with criminal records. We also get into the side of Cyprus most people never see: mountain monasteries still drawing pilgrims, village festivals on both sides of the line, and a capital city that somehow keeps functioning split in half. If you're curious how one small island ended up holding this much history, religion, and controversy at once, this documentary breaks it down.
