This morning I stood in front of Hive 5 for almost half an hour with a folded newspaper in my hand and couldn't commit. The colony isn't dying. It isn't in crisis. But it isn't thriving either — reduced population, aging queen in her third year, inconsistent brood pattern through June. And July is running out. This video is the decision I made this morning, walked through in real time. Not a tutorial. Not a procedure guide. One beekeeper thinking out loud about one of the hardest calls in summer management — combine now or leave alone and hope. I walk through both voices in my head, what July biology actually says about the timing, how the newspaper method works when you've committed, and what I still don't know when I close the gate this evening. ───────────────────────────────────── ⏱ TIMESTAMPS ───────────────────────────────────── 00:00 — This morning at Hive 5 — what I saw and why I stopped 02:20 — The voice that says leave them alone — four legitimate arguments 05:10 — The voice that says combine now — four counter-arguments 08:00 — What July biology is actually telling me — the winter bee timeline 10:45 — The newspaper method — how it works and what happens inside 13:15 — My decision for today — and the specific reasoning behind it 15:10 — What I don't know — and why that honesty matters ───────────────────────────────────── 📚 SOURCES & FURTHER READING ───────────────────────────────────── Winter bee physiology and fat body development: Fluri, P., Lüscher, M., Wille, H. & Gerig, L.
