This time we set out to explore one of the most impressive routes in Saxon Switzerland, Germany – the Pfaffenstein massif. From the very first steps, the trail winds through forest, rocks, and sandstone formations, merging everything into one seamless, naturally shaped path. Every section felt like a new adventure – sometimes narrow, sometimes wide, but always filled with unique shapes carved by nature. One of the highlights of the hike was Nadelöhr, also known as the “Needle’s Eye.” This extremely narrow rock passage forces you to turn sideways in places, with the gap shrinking to just 30–40 cm. The rock walls rise vertically, forming a natural stone tunnel that looks as if it was carved by nature itself. Here, the hike turns into a real adventure rather than a simple walk. After this section, the trail continued with more stairs, stone steps, and small viewpoints until we finally reached Barberina – the iconic stone needle and the true star of the Pfaffenstein massif. From the Barberina balcony, breathtaking views open up: rolling forests in the distance, towering sandstone pillars, and the wild spirit of Saxon Switzerland. Further along, the trail revealed several more stunning panoramas where the cliffs and sandstone towers looked extraordinary – as if nature had paused time. We allowed ourselves to enjoy the beauty of the massif, climbing and hopping from rock to rock, taking in the views that opened around us. This was the part of the hike where you simply stop, breathe, and appreciate the moment. After conquering all the stairs and stone steps, you emerge into an open plateau – a natural space to rest before the final highlight. This area also features many extremely narrow passages, confirming why this route truly deserves the name “Needle’s Gate.” Some constrictions are so tight that you must turn back and return to the main trail – nature sets the rules here. Eventually, the trail led us back to our starting point – the parking area. We finished the hike by retracing the same route we began with, now carrying all the emotions and impressions this massif had given us. Pfaffenstein is not just a hike. It is a place where stone tells stories, where every rock has its own shape, legend, and atmosphere. It is a mountain that lets you feel the true spirit of Saxon Switzerland – wild, ancient, and incredibly beautiful. Thank you for watching, and we’ll see you on our next hike.
