Amersham looks like one of England’s most peaceful historic towns, but its beautiful streets conceal a far darker story. I explore Old Amersham on foot, searching for the places connected to the town’s brutal religious past and discovering what remains there today.
Beginning among the old buildings and coaching inns of the historic town centre, this narrated exploration follows the streets towards St Mary’s Church and the story of the Amersham Martyrs. In the early 16th century, local people accused of holding forbidden religious beliefs faced persecution and execution. That history feels sharply at odds with the quiet, picturesque town that exists today.
This is not a silent walking tour or a conventional history lecture. It is a real-time exploration of Amersham, taking in its architecture, streets, landmarks and atmosphere while uncovering the story hidden behind them.
I explore English towns from a first-person perspective, combining walking, live observations and local history to discover what ordinary-looking streets can reveal about the people who lived there.

Did knowing this history change how you viewed Amersham or is there another part of the town I should explore?
