The history of Islam: how a faith born in a small trading town in the deserts of Arabia spread from Spain to India in less than a century, survived the fall of Baghdad, and became the religion of nearly two billion people. This Islam history documentary covers pre-Islamic Arabia, the life of Muhammad, the Sunni–Shia split, the Islamic Golden Age, the great Muslim empires, and the modern Islamic world. In 1258, the Mongols destroyed Baghdad, the capital of the Islamic world for five hundred years. Legend says the Tigris River ran black with ink from the books thrown into it. It looked like the end. But just forty years later, the descendants of those same Mongols became Muslims themselves. How did that happen? This documentary follows the complete history of Islam: Arabia between the Byzantine and Sasanian empires, Mecca and the Kaaba, the life of Muhammad, the first revelation in the Cave of Hira, Islam's place in the Abrahamic tradition, the refuge in Christian Aksum, the Hijra and the Islamic calendar, the Constitution of Medina, the Five Pillars, Abu Bakr and Ali, the origins of Sunni and Shia Islam, Karbala, the Birmingham Quran manuscript, the Battle of Yarmouk, the Dome of the Rock, Tariq ibn Ziyad and Gibraltar, the House of Wisdom, al-Khwarizmi and algebra, Ibn al-Haytham and Ibn Sina, al-Qarawiyyin, Indonesia and West Africa, Mansa Musa, Rumi and Sufism, the Seljuks and Manzikert, Saladin, the Mongols, the Ottoman, Safavid and Mughal empires, colonialism, the end of the caliphate in 1924, and Islam today. The capital could be destroyed. The caliphate could fall. The books could be thrown into the river. But a faith, a book, and millions of people turning toward the same direction five times a day could rise again after every disaster. This documentary is based on archaeological discoveries, peer-reviewed research and primary historical sources. Religious beliefs and academic perspectives are presented separately and objectively. Out of respect for Islamic tradition, the Prophet Muhammad and other prophets are not depicted in this video. Origins of Faith tells the history of the world's religions and belief systems, objectively and in minutes. New videos every Wednesday and Sunday.
