A backbencher who went to school with a cricket bat went on to build one of India's largest preschool networks. On InspireED Talk, Ankur Gupta sits down with Pritam Kumar Agrawal, Founder of Hello Kids, now around 1,200 preschool centres across India.
Pritam turned down a safe, funded construction materials business to start a single preschool in Bengaluru in 2005, then spent 60 days without a single admission. What followed was a franchise model built on no royalty, minimal lock-in and transparency, where partners stay for the value, not the contract.
We unpack preschool economics, why the teacher is the curriculum, AI in early childhood, regulating preschools, and Pritam 2.0: his plan for 100 premium K12 schools over the next 15 to 20 years.
What We Discussed

ABOUT THE GUEST
Pritam Kumar Agrawal is the Founder of Hello Kids, a Bengaluru-based preschool network of around 1,200 centres across India. From a Marwari business family in Odisha, he studied commerce in Delhi, completed an MBA and spent time in the UK before opening his first preschool in Bengaluru in 2005. Since 2009, Hello Kids has followed a no-royalty franchise model, with 1,117 franchises sold from the same office. He personally set up the first 700 centres, and the group's ecosystem now spans toys, classroom furniture, play equipment, uniforms and a kids clothing brand. He also mentors preschool owners, Hello Kids or not. Through Pritam 2.0, he is now building 100 premium K12 schools.
About Ankur Gupta
Ankur Gupta is the host of InspireED Talk and an education entrepreneur. Through long-form conversations with school founders, leaders and educators, he explores the ideas shaping education in India.
Key Takeaway
Scale does not have to come from control. Create so much value that people choose to stay. The teacher inside the classroom is the curriculum. A preschool is a responsibility first and a business second. Deliver more than you charge, and trust will follow.
