A field is supposed to be open. That's the whole idea of one — you can see for miles. But the video fills it with smoke and red light until you can't see anything at all, and the thing called elation ends up feeling like suffocation. That contradiction is what I couldn't get past. I'll be honest about why I saw it that way. I'm in the Reno area, and this has been the worst fire season I can remember — fires merging into each other, mushroom clouds of smoke over the Sierra every day for months. So when those plumes rolled across the screen I didn't see weather, I saw what I've been looking at all summer. Maybe that coloured it. But I think it works either way: the plunge, the dopamine hit, and then the walls closing in. Musically this is the one where you can hear Vessel's habits forming. Piano sitting underneath the heaviest chugging section instead of getting out of its way — nobody does that, and he's already doing it in 2016. The whole thing is in three. And the vocals sound like a different era entirely, closer to 2004 than 2016. Then "losing my faith in our lives apart," which lines up with the theory I laid out last video: Sleep and Vessel aren't two beings, they're two halves of one person, and this is the moment they stop being separate.
