🏡🇬🇾 "DON'T WALK PON DE COWDOWN!"
If you grew up in Guyana during the 1970s and 1980s, you've probably heard these words more than once!
Every Saturday morning, before visitors arrived and before the afternoon cricket games began, families across Berbice, Demerara, and Essequibo worked together to clean the yard and prepare the bottom house. One cherished tradition was spreading a thin layer of cow dung ("cowdown") mixed with water over the earthen floor beneath the house to keep the dust down, cool the ground, and leave it looking smooth and beautiful.
Children were always warned:
"Don't walk pon de cowdown!"
...but somehow, someone always forgot and left little footprints across Mummy's freshly finished work!
This song is a lighthearted tribute to the hardworking parents and grandparents who took pride in keeping their homes neat, welcoming, and full of love. It's a celebration of the simple traditions, laughter, and family moments that made growing up in Guyana so special.
Whether you grew up in Berbice, Demerara, Essequibo, Georgetown, New Amsterdam, or anywhere across Guyana, this song is dedicated to the memories that still bring a smile today.
