The Future of Nepal: 47 Lakes Are Ready to Burst | Full Documentary

When the Himalayas melt, thousands of glacial lakes form high above human civilization. Satellite surveys reveal 3,624 standing bodies of meltwater hanging over Nepal, held back only by loose rock and ancient glacial debris. Forty-seven of these massive natural reservoirs are categorized as immediate outburst threats. Many sit across the ridge in Tibet, draining southward into valleys where thousands of families live in the shadow of unstable moraine dams like Tsho Rolpa. As rising temperatures alter the ancient roof of the world, these silent mountain lakes threaten to unleash massive surge floods in minutes. This documentary examines satellite mapping records, transboundary river basins, and the precarious reality facing Nepal as the world's highest glaciers retreat.
