Fall asleep to one long day and one long year with the woman who held every key in a Gilded Age mansion. In 1903 a former housekeeper wrote that the superintending housekeeper of a great American house earned $50 to $150 a month, kept the books, paid every servant and could engage or dismiss any maid "without the possibility of interference" from master or mistress. At Biltmore, an 1898 ledger reportedly showed Emily King paid $300 a month, double the chief butler's $150. At the Frick house on Fifth Avenue, Minerva Stone started at $100 and reached $150 within a year, more than three times the average wage of the staff she ran. So who really ran America's greatest houses, and who held the keys while they slept?
