By the time she died in 1608, aged over 80, Elizabeth Talbot, Countess of Shrewsbury, was the richest and most powerful woman in England after the Queen herself. She married 4 times and buried every husband, turning each widowhood into a greater fortune. She bought the Chatsworth estate for £600, raised the astonishing Hardwick Hall with its walls of glass, and for 15 years she helped keep Mary, Queen of Scots, a prisoner inside her own homes. And the granddaughter she raised for a crown would end her days locked in the Tower of London.
