Radical acceptance is the practice of acknowledging reality as it is — without judgment, resistance, or constantly wishing things were different. In this video, I explore why fighting reality can add another layer of stress and suffering to already difficult experiences, and how mindfulness and self-compassion can help us respond differently. Drawing on the work of psychologist Marsha Linehan and meditation teacher and psychologist Tara Brach, we’ll look at what radical acceptance really means — and what it does not mean. Acceptance is not approval, resignation, or giving up. It is seeing clearly what is happening so that we can choose our next step with greater wisdom and compassion. I’ll also share a teaching story that beautifully illustrates what can change when we stop arguing with reality. As you watch, consider this question: Where in your life might you be using energy to fight something that has already happened or that you cannot control?
