Dori’s Week 2 Board & Train | Leave It Training for Reactivity & Impulse Control

Dori is starting her second week of Board & Train at Best Paw Forward Dog Training! For today’s training video, we focused on building a stronger “leave it” command using kibble as the distraction. This exercise is about much more than ignoring food. For Dori, “leave it” is an important tool for building impulse control, disengagement, and better responsiveness to her handler. These skills will eventually help us address her reactivity and give her a clearer way to disengage when she starts getting worked up. This will be especially important when Dori is around her sibling. When excitement or frustration starts building between them, we want Dori to be able to disengage, redirect her attention back to her handler, and settle before things escalate. We’re starting with a controlled distraction like kibble and will gradually work toward applying the skill around more challenging, real-world distractions as Dori progresses through her program.
