The GMC Motorhome (1973–78): GM built it like a car, and its owners never let it die. How a low-floor bus project became a front-wheel-drive motorhome that rides on air. In 1973 General Motors sold a motorhome unlike anything else in the RV business: an Oldsmobile Toronado front-wheel-drive powertrain, no driveshaft under a low floor, and tandem rear wheels riding on air springs. GMC built 12,921 of them before it turned the Pontiac plant over to trucks in 1978. This is the GMC Motorhome history, from a transit-bus idea for riders who struggled with steps, through the 1973 launch and the oil embargo, to the owners' clubs and parts makers who keep about 9,000 of them in the owners' registry today. ▸ Next: Revcon Kept Front-Wheel Drive Alive 13 Years After GM Quit    • Revcon: The Motorhome Charles Kuralt Bough...   CHAPTERS 0:00 A Bus, a Car, a Motorhome 1:26 A Bus First 4:17 Built Like a Car 8:05 The Showplace That Goes Places 10:20 The Cadillac of Motorhomes 11:53 A Hundred Trucks 13:48 Never Let It Die 16:19 Next: Revcon SOURCES Maxwell D.
