In 1936, a Michigan judge ruled that a trailer was a house. That answer cost the trailer the road. Why the mobile home mostly stopped moving, 1930–1960: a court case, a war, and two more feet.
In 1936, experts predicted that half of America would soon be living in trailers. They were wrong about the numbers, but not about the change. This documentary follows the house trailer from a vacation box on wheels to a year-round home: the Orchard Lake court case, the government trailer camps of World War II, the 1953 rename to "mobile home," and the 10-foot-wide Tenwide that traded the open road for more room. One invention split in two: the travel trailer you take camping, and the 1950s mobile home that mostly stayed where it was parked.
