On the morning of June 4, 1942, three American carriers — Enterprise, Yorktown, and Hornet — sat in the dark east of Midway Atoll and began launching aircrew into a fight their own planners doubted could be won. Roughly 400 men went up first, low on fuel, over empty ocean. Within about six minutes they found four Japanese fleet carriers and set three of them burning. This video traces the whole chain behind those six minutes. It starts in the late 1930s, when about eighty percent of Japan's imported oil came from territory under American control, and the American oil embargo of July 26, 1941 left Japan with roughly two years of reserves. It moves to Station Hyporcrypt, where the partial signal "AF was short water" was read as Midway. It covers the hurried repair work that put Yorktown back to sea, and the American command decision to send toward the oil slick instead of the safer track. It follows the Japanese plan that never recovered after its first blow, and ends where the wrecks rest today. The full story of that turning point, told without theatrics. SOURCES: Rochefort, J.
