Chuck E. Cheese has filed for bankruptcy twice, in 1984 and again in 2020. A viral rumor blames the pizza. The record points elsewhere: a franchisee said the first chain grew too fast, and the second filing followed a 2014 private equity buyout that took funded debt from about $383 million to more than a billion dollars, with interest of $87.2 million in fiscal 2019. This video walks through both bankruptcies, the economics of a business that sells fun at a 92% gross margin, the 2024 fight over the animatronic band, and the refinancings since. The 1983 loss of $58 million comes from a widely cited history of video games and is not independently verified. The company said about $705 million of debt was eliminated in its 2020 reorganization; the Wall Street Journal reported about $490 million; the two figures are not reconciled. Our own calculations are labeled: interest at 9.6% of fiscal 2019 revenue, and about 75% of the 2014 price borrowed. Venue counts include franchised venues. The pizza-recycling rumor is unproven and the company calls it false; we found no regulator action or court record supporting it. Dates such as the 1984 filing are given as reported (spring 1984).
