What if parenting was less about shaping who our children will become, and more about creating enough space for them to discover who they already are? In this video, I invite you to reflect on your role in your child's process of becoming — not simply becoming older or learning new skills, but becoming a person. We often think about what children need from us: boundaries, routines, emotional regulation, discipline, good habits. And all of these things matter. But there is another side to early childhood that we may sometimes overlook. Children are developing their own perspective, interests, preferences, ideas, choices and sense of themselves. They are practising autonomy and initiative, whether we consciously make space for that process or not. So what if we became less focused on guiding, teaching and optimising and gave more attention to discovering who is actually in front of us? This is not an invitation to be a permissive parent, nor to step back from our responsibility as parents. It is an invitation to consider the balance between influence and freedom, guidance and trust, directing and following. And this is where curiosity becomes important, because it allows us to ask a different question. “Who do I want my child to become?” transforms to “Who are they already becoming — and how can I support that process?” Please take your time with this one. Notice what you recognise, what challenges you, and what you may have been overlooking. Young children learn best through experience. Parents learn best by reflecting on experience.
