The River in Me is a song about discovering what begins to flow when survival finally gives way to safety. A song about creativity, becoming, and learning to let the river flow. THE RIVER IN ME [Verse 1] I used to think I had to find it Somewhere out beyond my reach A little spark I had to capture A little voice I had to teach But something changed beneath the surface Something loosened, something broke And suddenly the words came rushing Like a river through a stone [Pre-Chorus] I didn’t build it I didn’t start it I only opened up my heart and— [Chorus] Whoa,-ooo-woooa there’s a river inside of me I don’t know where it goes It just keeps on running (running and running) Everywhere I turn, it grows Ideas like water Words like rain Songs keep rising up again and again I’m standing here laughing At the mystery I thought I was looking for the river But the river was in me [Verse 2] There’s a tree beside the water And I think I finally know What it means to be rooted Yet still let that current flow I can feel it through my branches I can feel it in my roots Something living, something moving Something asking to come through I am a creator! A song, an idea A story, a way A reason to speak A reason to stay An advocate’s heart With something to say And somehow there’s more Every single day [Pre-Chorus] I didn’t plan it I can’t explain it I just stopped holding back and— [Chorus] Whoa,-ooo-oooaaa! there’s a river inside me I don’t know where it goes It just keeps on running Everywhere I turn, it grows Ideas like water Words like rain Songs keep rising up again and again I’m standing here laughing At the mystery I thought I was looking for the river But that river is in me [Bridge] How does a river keep flowing? Day after day after day? Millions of drops disappearing And millions more on their way Where does the water come from? Where does the current begin? Maybe some things aren’t meant to be answered… Some things just have to be lived So I’ll sit by the water And watch it go by Let it carry what needs carrying Let it teach me how to be alive [Breakdown] I’m not the river I am the tree I’m not the source I’m not the sea— No… I’m rooted beside it roots going deeper and deeper And somehow this river is running Through everything I am [Final Chorus] Whoa, there’s a river inside me I can finally feel it flowing I don’t have to know how it works I don’t have to make it run Ideas like water Words like rain These Songs keep rising up and up and out again and again and again I’m standing here laughing Hands open, finally I thought I had to become a creator Turns out— I already am. [Outro] So let it flow Let it floooow Let it flow (ooooh-ooooh) There’s a river of creativity Flowing, raging inside of me And I’m alive I’m alive (haaaaa yeeeeah) I’m alive. (I’m alive) Made with Love and Shared freely, Rachel — The Homeward Heart
