"Stretch Out Your Hand" was inspired by Matthew 12 and the way Jesus responded to people who were vulnerable, hurting, overlooked, or in need. As I’ve spent more time watching Jesus in these stories, I’ve been learning that the true Spirit of God is recognizable by the way He treats people. Jesus did not make vulnerable people prove their worth before offering compassion. He noticed them. He made room for them. He restored dignity where others saw inconvenience, weakness, or rule-breaking. Matthew 12 has also challenged me to look more carefully at the difference between religion that protects rules and a Spirit that restores people. Jesus repeatedly points back to mercy, compassion, and the heart of God. This song is a reminder to me: when I want to know whether something reflects the Spirit of God, look at what it does with the vulnerable. Does it reach out a hand? Does it make room?
