My name is Wade Corbin. My house is the last one on the line, so I have had to work most of this out myself.
There's a radio in my kitchen drawer with no battery, no plug and no solar panel, and it plays. The power comes from a radio tower about fifty miles away. In 1944, soldiers at Anzio built them from a razor blade, a pencil and a safety pin. In 1922 the government sold the instructions for five cents. And right now, on YouTube, videos promise a thirty-dollar "Tesla antenna" will power your whole house from thin air. One of those is true. One is not.
In this video:
The roof "Tesla antenna": the electricity in the air is real (about 100 volts per meter, hundreds of thousands of volts to the upper atmosphere), it killed a scientist in St. Petersburg in 1753, and Tesla's real 1901 patent was about radiant energy on a plate, not roof antennas
The radio that actually does it: a crystal set "depends completely on the energy from the transmitted signal" (ARRL), no batteries (NIST)
When every house had one: the 1920s (National Park Service), and the five-cent 1922 instructions with the oatmeal-box coil
The razor blade: the Army's Anzio 1944 foxhole radio, and why soldiers couldn't use tube radios
How it works: about 100 feet of wire, a ground, a high-impedance earpiece, AM only
What it costs (about $40 for a real passive kit, about $10 for the earpiece) and the kits that say "radio" but need batteries
Why it gets better at night: AM skywave (FCC)
The safety part: keep every wire well clear of power lines (CPSC), and unhook before a storm, never during (National Weather Service)
The number: the whole planet's atmospheric current is about 700 megawatts (Feynman), which leaves a roof with a fraction of a thousandth of a watt
The week the power is out: FEMA's 77 Primary Entry Point stations, built to stay on air for more than 60 days
Do you own a radio that works with no battery and no plug? Tell me in the comments, yes or no. I read every one of them.
Subscribe so you do not miss the next one.
Stay warm. Stay dry. And remember, the people who had to work these things out for themselves usually got closer to the truth than the people selling you the answer.
I am not an electrician or a radio engineer. Keep antenna wire well away from power lines, and never handle outside wires during a thunderstorm.
