My name is Wade Corbin. My house is the last one on the line, so I have had to work most of this out myself. There is a video with nearly seven million views that says apple juice and boric acid in a soda can will kill every yellowjacket and wasp for half a mile, and that it is safe for honey bees. I wanted that to be true. So I read what the people who study these insects for a living actually say. Three parts of it are wrong, and one of them is against federal law. But the promise is a good one, and it can be done. In this video: What is wrong with the juice bait: sugar draws honey bees (UC IPM), boric acid in syrup kills them (NPIC: 100 mg/L killed half of those tested), and a homemade poison bait is off-label, which federal law (FIFRA) makes unlawful "Half a mile": yellowjackets typically forage about a quarter mile, up to a mile Know what you're dealing with: honey bees, yellowjackets and paper wasps, and why the end of the season is when people get hurt The trap honey bees ignore: the RESCUE! yellowjacket trap, about $12 at Walmart when checked (heptyl butyrate "does not attract honey bees", Oregon State). Honest limit: it mainly catches the western yellowjacket; in the East, the W·H·Y trap, about $15 The no-poison meat trap over soapy water (UC IPM) The nest: at night, a red light, a labelled spray from 15 to 20 feet, and deltamethrin dust for ground nests, used exactly as its label says Near lights and outlets: read your can. Some are rated for it, the most common one says never Soapy water: individual wasps only, and it kills honey bees too The three things that put people in the hospital: gasoline or fire, plugging a nest in a wall, and burying a live ground nest If you get stung: run, get the stinger out fast, and the signs that mean 911 The thing about October: nests found in the fall "will naturally perish soon anyway" (Penn State), so for many of you the first hard frost does it for free Where is your nest? Ground, eaves or shed. Tell me in the comments, one word. I read every one of them. Subscribe so you do not miss the next one. Stay safe out there. And remember, the people who had to work these things out for themselves usually got closer to the truth than the people selling you the answer. I am not an exterminator. Use every pesticide exactly as its label says. If anyone in your house is allergic, or the nest is big, high up, in a wall or near electrics, call a professional. #Yellowjackets #Wasps #HoneyBees #PestControl #RuralLiving #SelfReliance #Homestead #FallPrep #ThingsThatWork
