One Company. One Army. An Entire Subcontinent.
The East India Company began in 1600 as a trading company with a simple purpose: to trade with the East.
But within the next few centuries, something extraordinary happened.
A private company that started with a royal charter eventually built its own army, collected taxes, fought wars, controlled vast territories, and became one of the most powerful political forces in India.
So how did a trading company become powerful enough to rule a huge part of the Indian subcontinent?
In this documentary, we uncover the untold story of the East India Company from its beginnings in London in 1600 to its rise as a military and political power in India, and finally to its downfall after the Revolt of 1857.
We begin with the Royal Charter of 1600, which gave the company exclusive trading privileges. We then follow its expansion into India, the creation of its enormous private army, and the growing influence of the company in Indian politics.
The story reaches a turning point with the Battle of Plassey in 1757, when Robert Clive and the East India Company defeated the Nawab of Bengal. What followed was far more significant than a military victory the company gained enormous political and economic influence over Bengal.
From there, we explore the company's revenue system, the Bengal Famine of 1769–1770, its growing power, and the consequences of allowing a private commercial organization to govern millions of people.
Finally, we reach 1857, when the company's own Indian soldiers the sepoys rebelled against its rule.
In 1858, the British Crown formally took control of India, ending the East India Company's political rule.
But the company itself continued to exist for several more years before finally being dissolved in 1874.
This is not simply a story about the British Empire.
It is a story about money, trade, power, military force, politics, exploitation, and the extraordinary rise and fall of one of history's most powerful companies.
