What followed was far more significant than a military victory the company gained enormous political and economic influence over Bengal. From there, we explore the company's revenue system, the Bengal Famine of 1769–1770, its growing power, and the consequences of allowing a private commercial organization to govern millions of people. Finally, we reach 1857, when the company's own Indian soldiers the sepoys rebelled against its rule. In 1858, the British Crown formally took control of India, ending the East India Company's political rule. But the company itself continued to exist for several more years before finally being dissolved in 1874. This is not simply a story about the British Empire.
