Neanderthal Tools Hid in Plain Sight in Romania

For decades, Romania was a blank spot on the map of Neanderthal bone tools. Then 83 were identified among 10,000 bone scraps from the Vârghiș Gorge. This documentary follows the people behind the discovery. We start in the Vârghiș Gorge in Transylvania, where Marian Cosac and George Murătoreanu have excavated a Neanderthal rock shelter since 2014, and where bone tools stubbornly failed to appear. We then compare Romania with sites across Europe and Siberia where Neanderthal bone tools number in the hundreds. Next, we go into the lab with Monica Mărgărit's team, who re-examined every fragment under the microscope and tested the wear against experimental replicas. We look at what the 83 tools were used for, and why they went unnoticed for so long. We compare them with the famous French lissoirs, the specialized bone tools once credited only to modern humans. Finally, we join the Romanian-Brazilian expedition still searching the gorge for the Neanderthals themselves. Sources: Mărgărit M. et al. (2026).
