Now I’m Nothing was originally written as an intro track for the Lollapalooza tour in 1991, but was also used throughout the Pretty Hate Machine tour. It rarely gets an outing now, but when it does, it always seems to stir NIN fans up and leaves us wondering… why did this never get a proper studio version? My guess is it would have been hard to find it a home outside of being an intro to Terrible Lie, as the two songs share a lot of the same DNA. When I started my channel last year and it gradually became NIN-themed, Now I’m Nothing kept coming up in requests and messages: would it be possible to create a studio version? At the time, I didn’t think it would be, as I rely on using studio vocals for my tracks and there is obviously no studio vocal available. But FINALLY, I’m pleased to release an unofficial, studio-quality version of Now I’m Nothing / Terrible Lie. I’m hoping these two tracks together (and the way I’ve created and mixed them ) come close to how it might have sounded if Now I’m Nothing had been conceived during the Pretty Hate Machine era and included as an intro on the album. You’ll notice the vocals in this track aren’t true studio quality. What you’re hearing is as close as I could realistically get, and I’m fully aware it’s not perfect. It’s taken hours (if not days) of extensive audio editing - spectral repair, de-reverbing, re-reverbing, crowd noise removal and dialogue enhancement to achieve this result.
