DIY Potato Storage Bin

What do you do when you harvest more potatoes than you know what to do with—and you don't have a root cellar? You build a DIY potato storage bin! In this video, I build a simple potato storage bin for our homestead using scrap and reclaimed lumber I already had around the property. The goal was to create an inexpensive way to store our potato harvest while allowing plenty of airflow and keeping unwanted pests like mice and rats out. This project combines two things I really enjoy: woodworking and homesteading. I'll take an unused roof truss, break it down into usable lumber, and turn it into a functional potato storage bin complete with a hinged lid and hardware cloth sides. I'll also show you how I used dados, ripped 2x4s, a miter saw, table saw, scroll saw, and a few simple woodworking techniques to put the whole thing together.
