Here, in her Fremantle (Walyalup) studio, we meet Australian/New Zealand artist Tessa MacKay. Known for her large-scale hyperrealist works, Tessa becomes both subject and collaborator in a portrait session that brings two practices together: a painter of detail and a photographer of intention. Shot on large format film, the process is tactile, deliberate, and resistant to digital sameness. Every frame carries weight. Henry is about six feet tall, with black hair. He wears an olive-green linen shirt with sleeves rolled to the elbows and black shorts. He walks along a Fremantle footpath, pulling a tan pelican case on wheels as he heads to Tessa’s studio.The studio is upstairs in an old port-side building. The space is bright white with tall ceilings. A window is open, sheer black curtains move in the breeze, and green plants line the room. Paintbrushes, a wheeled table with a fresh palette, and a partially finished canvas sit around the space. Henry sets up light stands, black cloth, and his large format camera while Tessa paints nearby. Later, Tessa sits for the portrait. She holds brushes in her left hand, resting them across her knees, and cups her chin with her right hand. Henry works with focus beneath the dark cloth of his camera as he composes the shot. After the session, Henry develops the film in his home studio and digitises the negative.
