It’s 50°C, the sand burns bare feet, and the Bedouin of Arabia and the Tuareg of the Sahara are covered from head to ankle, sometimes in black. Every instinct says they are doing it wrong. Science says they are doing it right. In this video we break down the physics of the desert robe: why hot air “cooks” bare skin, how a loose robe builds its own microclimate, why it saves your water, how it works like a chimney and a bellows, and what a 1980 study in the journal Nature found when it tested black robes against white robes, an army uniform and shorts. We also look at the shemagh and the Tuareg tagelmust, natural fibers like wool, cotton and linen, and the Quran’s mention of garments that protect from the heat (Surah An-Nahl).
