Remains of the BC Electric Railway Chilliwack Branch

Welcome aboard the Remains of the BC Electric Railway Chilliwack Line! On board, we'll be checking out the old Sumas and Langley Substation, Wooden crossbuck at 6029 156 Street in Surrey back in 2014 & a Fraser Valley Heritage Railway Society ride. The Chilliwack line passenger service started on 1910/10/03 with it's inaugurated run at 9a (*p87) along with 4 trips a day going from Downtown Vancouver Via the Central Park Line (Approx. route of Expo Line) to Surrey, then via current day SRY Railway, Cloverdale, Langley, Abbotsford and Downtown Chilliwack 4 trips a day including mail, fright, fruit & baggage. [5] *P153/p84 Over the years during operations, more lumber business and post office opened up *p110 near by but met with competitions including the Great Northern Railway for passenger service, new gravel roads at Cloverdale *p118 Canadian Pacific Rail discontinue service[*p121], April 1921 BCE started to invest to convert driving of the left side to the right *p149, Chilliwack Substation powering Agassiz Harrison area in 1931 *p193 with power to the Fraser valley by 1949 *p237, Chilliwack car bar burnt down on 1937/01/06 *p210, construction of a new bus depot in Chilliwack in 1947 *p254, service interrupted by flood between 1948/05/25 to 1948/06/15 *p256 [6/18] On 1948/10/27 plans were to cease service by 1950/01/01 in replacement with the Pacific Stage Lines going to Chilliwack with plans of fright services continuing. *p263 and ended service on Sep 30th 1950 *p266 with the imminent de-electrication of the passenger service, Chilliwack bus depot and fright service torn down. *p278 and the cars being burnt at the Kitilano barn (under the Burrard Bridge) *p268 [9] with some cars being sent to various museums *P288 In 1955, Yarrow teacher Miss Fowlie asked BC Electric if her class can have a ride along the Chilliwack line for her class to write about transportation on car 1304. *p283 [7/8] Later on the provincial government bought out BC Electric & change it to BC Hydro Railway in the early 1960s[2] Eventually Southern Railway of BC has taken over in 1988 [1] w/ majority of the line getting redeveloped including the old Chilliwack loop is now Salish Park with a Hotel, Sumas Substation is now a 2.9 million house [11], City of Abbottsford opened up a replica of Upper Sumas Station inside Miller Park back in 2022. [13] and Museum of Surrey opened up an exhibit for the line back in 2021 [14] w/ the Langley Substation being untouched. FVHRS was established back in 2001 [16] & eventually acquired Interurban trains from OREM, 1225 in 2005 [15] 1304 in 2009 [7] with 1207 & 1231 before 2018 from [4] City of Vancouver's financial constraints that closed the Downtown Historic Railway by Summer 2011 that operated by Transit Museum Society Volunteers.
