Where does the soul go when you die? Paul answers with two wishes, and he says there's a part of dying he does NOT want.
Most of what we repeat at funerals comes from blending those two wishes into one.
In this verse-by-verse study we read Philippians 1:21-24 and 2 Corinthians 5:1-8 phrase by phrase, six phrases in all, with the Greek words behind them: kerdos (gain), analysai (to depart, to untie), skenos (tent), ependysasthai (to be further clothed), endemeo and ekdemeo (at home and away), and arrabon (guarantee). We look at what the text says, what scholars debate, and where I'm drawing my own inference, labeled out loud. We also give the "soul sleep" view its full strength, and see how Philippians 3:20-21 puts Paul's two hopes in order: company with Christ now, and a resurrection body later.
Far better is not the same as finished.
Scripture quotations: New King James Version.

This week, open Philippians 1 and 2 Corinthians 5 side by side and read them slowly. Then ask yourself: when I picture the life to come, do I hope only for "going to heaven," or also for the body God has promised? Let Paul's two wishes shape the way you grieve and the way you hope.
Afraid you might be beyond that hope? Watch next: Could You Have Committed the Unforgivable Sin Without Knowing? • Could You Have Committed the Unforgivable ...
