Were you ever told that a real Christian doesn't get depressed? There's a prayer in your Bible, written by a worship leader, that says otherwise. In Psalms 42 and 43, a man stops in the middle of his prayer and talks to his own soul: "Why are you cast down, O my soul?" He asks it three times. We read each round slowly, look at the Hebrew words behind "cast down," "disquieted," and "hope," and watch how the psalm moves from tears to light and truth, without ever pretending the darkness isn't there. Along the way we call Elijah from 1 Kings 19, the prophet who called down fire and then asked to die; we answer the strongest objection ("Rejoice in the Lord always"); we look at three ways this teaching gets misused; and we hear the same language on Jesus' lips in Gethsemane. Finally, the one small letter in the refrain that changes between round one and round three. And if the heaviness has lasted for weeks, tell one person.
