Unboxing my Google Developer Expert for Android Swag 2026 📦

Google sends me one of these every year. Getting the first one took eight years. This is the Google Developer Expert (GDE) box: what is in it, what the title actually is (not a job, no pay, no test), and the honest story of how I got in. I spent years thinking I was not good enough for it. Turns out I was already doing the work. Someone just had to notice. If you are a developer who thinks titles like this are for the rock star coders, this one is for you. Chapters 0:00 Google sends me one of these every year 0:16 Opening the box 0:24 I don't work for Google (what a GDE is not) 0:32 What Google actually notices 0:46 My first talk, 2014 1:14 I thought it was for the rock star coders 1:29 A friend told me to stop overthinking it 1:41 You can't apply. Someone has to nominate you 1:48 The interview question 2:00 Five pins. I don't see a VIP club, I see time 2:23 What another year of showing up looks like 2:43 The title didn't change my life 3:04 The most important thing on the pin is the year 3:24 I am not a genius. I kept showing up 3:33 How your journey starts this week What to do this week 1. Take one thing you figured out at work and write it down. 2. Share it online. Maybe give a talk about it at a local meetup. 3. Answer someone's question on Discord, Slack or Reddit, using your real name. 4. Keep doing that. The title takes care of itself. About the program Google Developer Experts: https://developers.google.com/communi... You cannot apply directly. A Googler or an existing GDE nominates you, then there are interviews. It is a recognition, not a job. Find me Blog: https://blog.droidchef.dev
