Shopify Quit React Native. Mobile Has Done This Before.

Shopify rebuilt its Shop app from React Native to Swift and Kotlin in 12 weeks. Mobile keeps making this trip, and this time the reason is different. In 2020, Shopify said React Native was the future of mobile. Six years later they rebuilt the Shop app in Swift and Kotlin, in 12 weeks, with a core team of six engineers and a lot of coding agents. Their React Native apps were fast. So why rewrite them? I've been building Android apps since before Android Studio existed, and I don't think this is about React Native at all. It's about what got cheap, and what got expensive. In this video I go through what Shopify actually published, the four times this industry has had this exact fight (Facebook, Airbnb, Dropbox, Discord), the catch in the benchmark numbers, and the part of Shopify's post most people skipped: when agents write the code, checking it becomes the bottleneck. You'll leave with a way to make this call for your own team: if writing code got nearly free tomorrow, what would still be expensive for you?
