Warhammer Fantasy lore to fall asleep to, told by the one who lived it. Every word is his. This time there is no Space Marine, no Emperor, no Imperium. This is the Old World, and the man speaking is a poet.
Felix Jaeger was a merchant's son in Altdorf who killed a man in a duel, wrote a pamphlet about a tax on windows, and ended up under a Reiksguard horse. A dwarf with one eye and a crest like a bad sunset pulled him out, and that night, very drunk, Felix swore in blood to follow the Slayer to his doom and write the poem of it.
Thirty years later there is no poem. There is a road north, a coven in a
coach, a caravan and a girl buried at the foot of a pass, a sword out of a tomb, a year in the sewers of Nuln, an airship into the Chaos Wastes, a hold that had waited two hundred years, a daemon that should have been enough and was not. There is Praag, and Sylvania, and a woman who was taken. There is a girl from a burned village who came back grown. There are four volumes of prose that the Empire read and decided were fiction. And there is a table in Middenheim, with fires in the window, where the poet finally asks himself the one question he has spent a lifetime avoiding.
This is the account he wrote at that table, so that a version in his own words would exist before somebody wrote it in theirs.
WHAT'S COVERED
The duel, the pamphlet, the riot, and a hand on his collar
What a Slayer is, what the crest means, and the four pieces he was given
Geheimnisnacht, Kirsten, the wolf riders, Manfred, and the sword called Karaghul
Nuln, the sewer watch, his brother Otto, the rats nobody would name, and a grey seer
The airship, Snorri, Borek, Ulrika, the Wastes, and the thing with the whip at Karag Dum
The dragon, Praag, Drakenhof, the years that greyed him and not the dwarf
Kat, the interval in Altdorf, the four volumes, the window, and the torn page
Middenheim, the question asked sober, and why the poem could never be written
Told in his voice. The events are the canon. The voice is written for this
channel, from the lore, one man's account of an oath he never regretted, and what that costs.
Sleep well.
