Half a Sentence is a complete Bob & Otto children's book read-aloud for ages 4–8 about listening, misunderstandings and perspective-taking.
Bob hears Otto through a fence and believes their friendship is over. The words he heard were real, but the sentence was unfinished. Otto meant to say that Bob was his best friend; he left the most important part until Bob had already gone.
For teachers, pedagogues and school counselors, the story offers a concrete way to explore how a belief forms from incomplete information. Bob notices something, interprets it and acts before checking. Otto's side raises a second question: how can a kind intention be misunderstood when it is communicated unclearly?
Children can compare what Bob heard with what he believed, then consider what each friend could do differently. This connects to social information processing and theory of mind: noticing that another person may know something we do not. Parents and caregivers can use the same questions at home.
Questions for discussion:
What information was Bob missing?
How could Bob check his understanding before leaving?
What could Otto say first to make his meaning clearer?

Read forward for Bob's perspective, then back the other way for Otto's. Reversing the order of the same lines reveals another meaning. Both boys have something to discover.
