I used to think trauma had something to do with why I’m creative. It seemed logical. I grew up constantly watching people, reading moods, anticipating what might happen next, and inventing ways to navigate situations I couldn’t control. Later, I became obsessed with writing, painting, storytelling and finding unusual ways of looking at things. So I assumed the trauma had somehow created the creativity. But I’m starting to think about it differently. What if trauma didn’t MAKE me creative? What if I was creative all along, and the circumstances I grew up in simply forced that creativity to point towards survival? Creativity, when you strip away the beautiful paintings and published essays, might simply be the ability to find novel solutions to problems. And if that’s true, then a lot of things we don’t normally call “creative” suddenly start looking very different. Reading someone’s mood from their back or footsteps, figuring out what someone’s expression means from the way they carry themselves and finding a way out of a difficult situation and adapting constantly. It makes sense that that was 'creativity' too. And now that I’m safer, I get to redirect that same cognitive machinery towards things I actually want to make. Maybe I didn’t BECOME creative like I thought earlier, I was creative all along with immense potential which was redirected elsewhere that I now get to choose to do soemthing with.
