The Kawasaki KLX300 was the smallest motorcycle in the ‪@Outbackmotortek‬ Moto Camping Challenge, so naturally Lorry gave me the longest and most ambitious mission of the entire five-bike series. And almost nothing went according to plan. Welcome to Episode 5 of the Outback Motortek Moto Camping Challenge and Bike 4 of 5. For this series, Lorry from ‪@Outbackmotortek‬ chooses the destination, gives me the GPS coordinates, and leaves me to figure out the most adventurous way to get there. This time he went all in. Multiple checkpoints in the Fly Hills Range. Hard-to-reach viewpoints. An ice cream stop. A long day of backroads and trails. And because of the KLX300’s tiny 2-gallon fuel tank, this was supposed to be the first day of the challenge that required a fuel stop. That was the plan anyway. Then the battery died about an hour into the ride. From there we had a replacement battery that needed some convincing to fit, a kickstand spring that launched itself into the wilderness, full campsites, a mud puddle I somehow managed to ride into TWICE, and eventually a race against darkness to find somewhere to sleep. Adventure riding at its finest. 😂 Thankfully the ‪@RubyMoto‬ lights were very much appreciated by the time I finally rolled into camp. But somewhere underneath all that chaos was a really interesting question: Can a 292cc dual sport actually make a good moto camping and lightweight adventure bike? The Kawasaki KLX300 weighs dramatically less than the big ADV bikes I had already ridden in this challenge, has a 21/18-inch wheel setup, long-travel suspension and a six-speed transmission. And once the terrain gets difficult, being on a small, lightweight bike starts making an awful lot of sense. The downside? That tiny fuel tank definitely creates some range anxiety when your plans involve disappearing into the mountains for the day. Or is 300cc and a 2-gallon tank just too much compromise? Let me know in the comments. And make sure you subscribe to ‪@RaggedRoadsMoto‬ and ‪@Outbackmotortek‬ and hit the notification bell.
