El Niño isn't a forecast anymore. NOAA says there's a greater than 90% chance of a very strong event through this autumn and winter. A few months ago that number was 37%. I walk through how the system actually works, what makes this event different from the ones in 1997 and 2015, and why the question everyone asks about climate change might be the wrong one. Over 90% of the extra heat we've trapped has gone into the oceans, not the air. Ocean heat content just hit a record. So even if El Niño never changes at all, it's now landing on a fundamentally hotter planet. The oscillation doesn't have to get stronger for the consequences to get worse.
