What is a Slavic name like Zagora doing in Africa? Why do names resembling Gora, Goran, Gor and Goro appear across five continents? In this episode of The Slighthouse, we take our investigation beyond Europe and follow one of the most intriguing geographical patterns on the map: the Slavic word GORA — meaning mountain, hill or high ground — and remarkably similar names found across Asia, Africa, the Americas and Australia. From ancient Zagora in Paphlagonia and the Zagros Mountains of Iran to Ghor in Afghanistan, Zagora in Morocco, Goran and Gorom-Gorom in Burkina Faso, Goro in Haiti, Soto Goro in Uruguay and Lake Goran in Australia, the same question keeps returning: Coincidence — or traces of something much older? This episode does not assume that every similar name is Slavic. Some have local or non-Slavic explanations, some remain uncertain, and resemblance alone cannot prove a common origin. Instead, we apply a simple test: NAME — MEANING — LANDSCAPE Where did the name come from? What did it originally mean? And what does the surrounding landscape tell us? Because perhaps the real question isn't whether Slavs named the world. Perhaps it is: HOW OLD IS GORA? Could the Slavic languages have preserved an ancient geographical word — or an ancient form of a geographical root — once distributed far beyond the historically documented Slavic world? Or are we looking at an extraordinary chain of linguistic coincidences? Follow The Slighthouse as we illuminate Europe’s forgotten origins through history, language, place names and the landscapes that preserve them.
