This sacred relic was housed here for 500 years before being moved to Echmiadzin Cathedral, where it remains today. Founded according to tradition by Saint Gregory the Illuminator following Armenia's adoption of Christianity, the monastery was originally called Ayrivank (Monastery of the Cave) due to its remarkable rock-cut construction. What makes Geghard truly unique is that half of the monastery is not visible from the outside, as it is built directly into the huge rocks that surround it, a feat of architectural harmony between the human mind and nature that still astonishes visitors today.
