Taking over off-season winter maintenance at Saltmeadow House—an 1894 cedar-shingled inn cut off from the Cape Cod mainland whenever a Nor'easter floods the Nauset Marsh Causeway—was supposed to be six months of quiet carpentry and tending the basement boiler. The third-floor water lines were drained, the spare key was locked in the oak cabinet behind the front desk, and the only master passkey hung on a leather lanyard around my own neck. Instead, every time the barometer plunged and four feet of freezing Atlantic water swallowed our only road out, fresh black marsh mud appeared beside the shut-off radiator in the North Room—until I finally took my carpenter's rule upstairs during a 65-knot blizzard and measured the wall behind the wainscoting.
