Working solo overnight security at an idled concrete grain elevator in rural central Illinois sounded like the quietest winter contract imaginable. Eight monochrome cameras, four magnetic door sensors, and two deadbolted steel doors were supposed to make the glass-walled scale house the one safe room on the property. Instead, every time I stepped out into the freezing prairie wind to check the rail spur, someone was sitting in my chair in the dark—until I turned off the overhead lights, sat in that exact rotated position myself, and realized what the double-pane hallway glass was actually angling into view. Settle in, dim the lights, and let the wind across the winter cornfields carry you through tonight's long-form psychological night-shift story on NightShift Audio.
