In today’s reaction, we’re diving into the differences between Japanese anime fandom and Western anime fandom—and why conversations surrounding anime can feel completely different depending on which side of the community you’re talking to. For a lot of people, anime is simply entertainment: watch the show, enjoy the characters, talk about your favorite moments, and move on. But modern online anime discussions can sometimes turn into arguments about culture, morality, representation, censorship, localization, character designs, and whether certain stories should even exist in the first place. Monte Sensei takes a look at the contrast between anime fans who simply enjoy the medium and the kind of online discourse that has become increasingly common within Western fandom. While reacting, I’ll be sharing my thoughts on Japanese versus Western anime fandom, how social media has changed anime discussions, cultural differences, fandom arguments, and whether people are starting to take entertainment way too seriously.
