Artextric reacts to “The Softening of Current Anime Fandom” by Monte Sensei.
In today’s reaction, we’re diving into a debate about how anime fandom has changed over the years and whether modern anime audiences have become less comfortable with darker, more provocative, violent, or controversial material.
Anime has never been limited to one type of story. From lighthearted shows to disturbing psychological series, extreme action, horror, mature themes, and intentionally uncomfortable storytelling, the medium has always explored a huge range of ideas.
Monte Sensei discusses the differences between older and newer anime fandom, changing audience expectations, reactions to controversial material, and whether certain types of anime that gained cult followings years ago would receive a very different response from today’s online community.
While reacting, I’ll be sharing my thoughts on old-school versus modern anime fandom, darker anime, changing standards, online discourse, criticism, and whether anime fans have actually become “softer” or the community has simply become much larger and more diverse.
