In the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, measuring character speed is famously inconsistent, as characters with completely different biological and mechanical capabilities are often pegged to the exact same speed tier for gameplay convenience. Cream the Rabbit, whose primary movement is flying via ear-flapping, and Charmy Bee, a minor sidekick whose speed function is vertical aerial traversal, both run just as fast as Sonic in modern 2D games and Sonic Heroes. This structural design logic even extends to power-focused characters like Vector the Crocodile and combat-heavy robots like E-123 Omega, whose speeds are primarily dictated by their need to clear team-based levels at the same pace as Sonic. Other characters completely ignore the concept of velocity: Big the Cat’s entire narrative and gameplay revolve around slow, patient fishing, while E-102 Gamma's stages trade speed-running for a stressful, constantly depleting countdown timer.
However, some characters achieve extraordinary speed through unique, situational mechanics that bypass traditional running entirely. Wave the Swallow, the mechanic for the Babylon Rogues, derives her speed completely from riding turbulence on her Extreme Gear board, while Silver the Hedgehog achieves supersonic velocity through sheer psychokinetic flight. On an even grander scale, Emerl's speed and abilities scale exponentially depending on how many Chaos Emeralds he has absorbed, making him as fast as whoever he happens to be fighting. Perhaps the most dramatic departure from traditional speed mechanics is Darkspine Sonic—a complete, final-state transformation unlocked instantly by collecting the World Rings in Sonic and the Secret Rings, turning speed into a binary power-up rather than a measurable, biological trait.
