Exploring Cypress Grove Cemetery | New Orleans’ Firemen’s Cemetery

🔥 Established in 1840 by the Firemen’s Charitable & Benevolent Association, Cypress Grove Cemetery was created as a final resting place for New Orleans’ volunteer firemen and their families. The cemetery was built near the former banks of Bayou Metairie, and its Egyptian Revival entrance dates back to its earliest days. Over time, elaborate tombs were built for individual fire companies, and Cypress Grove became the final resting place of firefighters, politicians, businessmen, soldiers, and generations of New Orleans families. ⚰️ There was also a Cypress Grove Cemetery No. 2, which included a potter’s field and was used during a period when disease and epidemics were taking a devastating toll on the city. Cypress Grove No. 2 eventually closed in 1920.
